Boys will be boys

When I was in Louisville for Sarah's wedding, I was chilling in front of the TV when a commercial for Tonka trucks aired. The television featured a little boy playing with his bright yellow truck and a mother voiced over, "Let's face it boys are built differently" and then the commercial's tag line read "Tonka: Built for boyhood".

OMG! Seriously!

Yes, a boy has a penis but his penis does not require him to play with trucks. It also does not predetermine that he will like trucks. A vagina does not mean you don't like trucks either.

We are talking about children - moldable young children who have yet to be formed in chauvinistic males. I can hear the grunting now.

What if you have a son that does not like trucks? Is your son less of a male? Is your daughter a bit masculine because she likes to push a toy truck around the floor? How much are we damaging our children when we only let them play with certain toys? If they have an interest in the nongender approved toys, do we let them know that this means something is wrong with them.

They are children! Boycott Tonka. Check out their website and send them comments. Girls can play with trucks; some girls even like dirt; and some boys don't.
